Veneer guarantees: what they cover, and what they don't

A guarantee is part of what you are paying for. Reading it properly before treatment tells you what happens if a veneer chips, comes loose or fails, and who pays for what.

Short answer

A veneer guarantee usually covers failure of the veneer itself, such as a fracture or debonding, for a set period, often with repair or replacement at the clinic. It usually does not cover travel, damage from accidents or sport, problems from poor hygiene or missed check-ups, or grinding without the night guard you were advised to wear. Read the period, the conditions, the exclusions and where the work must be done before you book.

The NHS treatment abroad checklist suggests asking, before you go, what happens if something goes wrong and who will pay for any further treatment. For veneers, the guarantee is most of the answer. Two clinics can quote similar prices and offer very different protection, so the terms are worth reading line by line. This article uses Precious Dental's published terms as a worked example, because they are ours and public, but the same questions apply to any clinic.

Start with the periods

Guarantee periods often differ by treatment. Precious Dental's published table, for example:

TreatmentGuarantee
Laminate veneers3 years
Crowns (including E-max and zirconia full veneers)5 years
Smile makeover5 years
Teeth whitening1 year

From dentprecious.com/guarantee, checked October 2026.

Notice that a laminate veneer and a crown have different periods. That is one more reason to know which you are getting for each tooth. See veneers or crowns?

What is usually covered

  • The veneer failing: a fracture or crack in normal use, or a veneer coming off.
  • Repair or replacement of that veneer, usually at the clinic.
  • Sometimes accommodation for the treatment period. Precious Dental's terms say the clinic provides hotel accommodation for guarantee treatment.

For context, research suggests these events are not common: in a meta-analysis of ceramic veneers, debonding occurred in about 2% and fracture or chipping in about 4% (Morimoto et al., 2016). A guarantee is protection against the minority of cases.

What is usually not covered

Precious Dental's terms list, among things not covered: deep hygiene and gum treatment, root canal treatment, laser teeth whitening, previous dental work by other dentists, and travel costs. Other clinics have similar lists. Commonly excluded:

  • Flights and travel to the clinic.
  • Damage from accidents, falls or contact sports.
  • Problems caused by gum disease or decay from poor cleaning.
  • Root canal treatment on a veneered tooth.
  • Work done on the same teeth by another dentist.

Conditions that can reduce or void a guarantee

Precious Dental's published terms say the guarantee may be reduced or void if:

  • oral hygiene is neglected or the dentist's instructions are not followed;
  • routine check-ups are missed;
  • payment obligations are not met;
  • removable restorations are not kept and maintained properly;
  • you grind your teeth and do not wear the night guard advised;
  • damage comes from contact sports or accidents.

These are reasonable in principle: they match the known reasons veneers fail. A clinical study found most fractures and debonds in patients who ground their teeth, and that night splints reduced fractures (Granell-Ruíz et al., 2014). The practical message is to keep evidence: check-up records from your UK dentist and the night guard itself.

Where guarantee work is done

Most overseas clinics carry out guarantee work at their own premises. Precious Dental's terms, for example, say guarantee work is done at the clinic in Antalya, that you arrange your own flights, and that the clinic provides hotel accommodation for the treatment period. For a single loose veneer, the cost of a flight may exceed the cost of having it re-bonded at home. Talk to the clinic first: it can advise whether a local repair makes sense and how it affects the guarantee. See a veneer came off.

Questions to ask before booking

  1. The periodHow long, for each treatment on my plan?
  2. The coverRepair, replacement, or a contribution? Free of charge?
  3. The placeMust the work be done at your clinic? What about a UK repair?
  4. The costsWho pays for flights, hotel, transfers?
  5. The conditionsCheck-ups, night guard, hygiene: what proof do you need?
  6. The exclusionsWhat is not covered?
  7. In writingCan I have the full terms before I pay?

A guarantee is not insurance

A guarantee is the clinic's promise about its own work. It is not insurance for everything that might happen to your teeth. Travel insurance can cover emergencies during the trip, but often excludes planned treatment and its complications; check the policy. Paying part of the cost by credit card may give extra consumer rights in some situations; Citizens Advice explains how card protection works. Neither replaces reading the guarantee.

Comparing guarantees between clinics

A longer period is not automatically better. A guarantee that requires travel, at your cost, for every claim, or that has wide exclusions, may be worth less than a shorter one with clear terms. Compare like with like: the same treatment (laminate veneer versus crown), the same cover, the same conditions. Our cost page has a checklist for comparing quotes fairly.

Three situations, worked through

These are examples, not real patients, to show how typical terms apply.

  • A laminate veneer comes off after 18 months while eating soup. This is the kind of failure a guarantee is for. Under terms like Precious Dental's, the veneer would be re-bonded or replaced at the clinic, with hotel accommodation provided; the patient arranges the flight. If the veneer is intact, the clinic may also discuss whether a local re-bond is simpler.
  • A veneer chips after two years; the patient grinds and stopped wearing the night guard. Grinding without the advised night guard is listed as a condition that can reduce or void the guarantee. The clinic may still help, but cover is not automatic. Keeping the guard, and wearing it, would have made the claim straightforward.
  • A gum recedes after four years and a line shows above a veneer. This is usually a gum change rather than a failure of the veneer, and gum treatment is commonly excluded. A new veneer would normally be private work.

Records that make a claim easy

If you ever need to use a guarantee, the clinic will want to know what happened and that the conditions were met. Keep, in one folder: your treatment plan and invoice; the guarantee terms; a note of which teeth, material and shade; check-up records from your UK dentist; and photos of the problem taken on the day. Message the clinic as soon as something happens, rather than months later.

Guarantees and composite veneers

Composite bonding is softer and expected to need polishing and small repairs over the years, so clinics often guarantee it differently from porcelain, or not at all beyond the first months. Ask specifically. Given its shorter life, it is sensible to budget for touch-ups with composite rather than relying on a guarantee.

When the guarantee ends

A guarantee ending does not mean the veneers are expected to fail; most last well beyond their guarantee period. After it ends, any repair or replacement is simply paid for as normal treatment, at the clinic or at home. Keeping up the same care routine keeps that day as far away as possible.

Keeping your guarantee valid

  • Keep your plan, receipts and the guarantee terms together.
  • Keep check-ups with your UK dentist and keep the records.
  • Wear your night guard if one was advised.
  • Follow the care routine; see cleaning products for veneers.
  • Contact the clinic before any other dentist works on the veneered teeth.

At Precious Dental our guarantee terms are published in full before you book: 3 years on laminate veneers and 5 years on crowns and smile makeovers. If you have a question about how they apply to your plan, ask us before you pay. See why Precious Dental.

Common questions

How long is a typical veneer guarantee?

It varies by clinic and material. Precious Dental's published terms give 3 years on laminate veneers and 5 years on crowns, including full veneers, and on smile makeovers.

Does a guarantee cover flights?

Usually not. Precious Dental's terms, for example, say guarantee work is carried out at the clinic in Antalya, that you arrange your own flights, and that the clinic provides hotel accommodation for the treatment period.

Is a chipped veneer covered?

If it is a failure of the veneer, it may be. Damage from accidents or contact sports, and grinding without a night guard, are commonly excluded.

What makes a guarantee void?

Typical conditions include neglected hygiene, missed check-ups, not following instructions, unpaid balances and not wearing an advised night guard.

Can a UK dentist do guarantee work?

Usually guarantee work is done by the clinic that gave the guarantee. If you have work done elsewhere, it may not be covered. Contact the clinic first.
