E-max veneers: laminate or full, and why it matters

E-max is a well-known porcelain for veneers and crowns. The word that follows it, laminate or full, decides how much of your tooth you keep.

Short answer

E-max is a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic made by Ivoclar, used for veneers and crowns because it looks natural and is strong. An E-max laminate veneer is a true veneer on the front of the tooth (£300 per tooth with us). An E-max full veneer covers the whole tooth, so it is really a crown (£225).

What E-max is

E-max is a range of dental ceramics made by Ivoclar. The material used for most E-max veneers and crowns is lithium disilicate glass-ceramic. It's popular for front teeth because it lets light pass through a little, as natural enamel does, so it doesn't look flat or chalky.

The material is only half of it. How natural the result looks depends just as much on the dentist's planning and the laboratory's skill with shape and shade.

E-max laminate veneers: the true veneer

A laminate veneer is a thin E-max shell bonded to the front of the tooth. The Oral Health Foundation explains that a small amount of enamel is removed from the front so the veneer doesn't feel bulky, and the veneer is then checked for fit and colour and bonded in place.

  • Keeps most of your natural tooth
  • Suits healthy front teeth that are stained, chipped, worn or uneven
  • £300 per tooth with us, 3 years written guarantee

E-max full veneers: really a crown

An "E-max full veneer" covers the tooth all the way round, 360 degrees. That is a crown. To fit one, the tooth is shaped on every side, so much more of it is removed.

  • Right for a front tooth with a large filling, damage or a root filling
  • Not right, in our view, for a healthy tooth that only needs a colour or shape change
  • £225 per tooth with us, 5 years written guarantee

Watch the wording. "16 E-max veneers" on a quote can mean 16 laminate veneers or 16 crowns. Ask which, tooth by tooth, before you book.

How E-max veneers are fitted

  1. PlanExamination, X-ray, photos and a digital design of the shape you want.
  2. PrepareA thin layer of enamel is refined (laminate) or the tooth is shaped all round (full). Teeth are scanned and you wear temporaries.
  3. MakeThe laboratory makes each veneer from E-max.
  4. Try in and bondShape and shade are checked in your mouth before the veneers are permanently bonded and your bite is adjusted.

With us this happens in one visit of about 5 to 7 days. See the veneers trip, day by day.

Common questions

Is E-max the same as porcelain?

E-max is a type of dental ceramic, often called porcelain in everyday speech. Technically it is a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic.

Laminate or full E-max veneers: which should I have?

If your teeth are healthy and you only want to change colour, shape or small gaps, laminate veneers keep far more of your tooth. Full veneers (crowns) are for teeth that are already heavily filled, damaged or root-treated. Your examination decides it, tooth by tooth.

How many days does it take?

With us, porcelain veneers take about 5 to 7 days in Antalya, in one visit.

What guarantee do E-max veneers have?

Our written guarantee is 3 years on laminate veneers and 5 years on crowns, including E-max full veneers.
