How many veneers do you actually need?

Packages come in 8, 12, 16, 20 or more. The right number is the teeth your smile shows that genuinely need changing, and that may be fewer than you think.

Short answer

Only treat teeth that show when you smile and genuinely need a change. Count the teeth visible in a broad smile in the mirror: for many people treating the upper front teeth is enough, sometimes with the lower front teeth too. Healthy back teeth that don't show rarely need veneers or crowns, and treating them adds cost and removes tooth for no gain.

Count the teeth your smile shows

Stand in front of a mirror in good light and smile broadly, the way you would in a photo. Count the teeth you can see on the top, then on the bottom. Then talk for a minute and watch which teeth show.

Those are the teeth that shape how your smile looks. Teeth further back that never show don't change your smile, whatever their colour.

What the usual package sizes mean

PackageUsually coversOur view
8 teethThe upper front teethOften enough for a natural change if the lower teeth hardly show
12 teethUpper front teeth plus a few more on each sideFor wider smiles where more upper teeth show
16 teethUpper and lower front teethWhen both rows show and both need changing
20 or moreMost of both rowsRarely needed on healthy teeth; ask why each tooth is included

Why more isn't better

  • Every treated tooth loses some natural structure, and a crowned tooth loses a lot
  • Every veneer or crown will need looking after and, one day, replacing
  • Large, identical sets can look less natural than a few well-matched teeth

The Oral Health Foundation describes veneers as a long-term treatment. Treat the teeth that need it, and leave healthy ones alone.

Matching the teeth you don't treat

If you're unhappy with colour, consider whitening first. Whitening only lightens natural teeth, so it won't change veneers or crowns later. Whitening first means your veneers can be matched to your new shade, and the untreated teeth won't look darker next to them.

How we decide with you

We look at photos of your smile before you travel, then at your examination we check each tooth. Your written plan lists every tooth and what, if anything, is being done to it. If eight veneers will do, we'll say so.

Common questions

Should I do top and bottom veneers?

Only if your lower teeth show when you talk and smile and need a change. Many people only need the upper teeth treated, sometimes with whitening for the lower teeth so the colours match.

Will a few veneers match my other teeth?

They can, if the shade is chosen to match. Whitening your natural teeth first lets the veneers be matched to your new, lighter colour, because whitening won't lighten veneers afterwards.

Is it cheaper per tooth to do more?

Package prices can work out lower per tooth, but saving money on teeth you didn't need treated isn't a saving. Treat what needs treating.

Can I add more veneers later?

Usually yes. Starting with fewer and adding later keeps your options open.

An honest second look

Not sure what your teeth need?

Send us a few photos of your smile. A dentist looks at them and tells you plainly whether you need veneers, crowns, whitening, bonding, or nothing at all.
